Like Sodium (Na), decomposition occurs during contact with water, producing dihydrogen, which can lead to an explosion. The reducing property of metallic potassium is used in many fine chemical and pharmaceutical reactions. Potassium is also frequently used in agriculture and the fertilizer market.
