White or silvery in colour, germanium is a brittle metal. It is one of the few elements whose volume increases from the liquid to the solid state. Germanium is considered an excellent semiconductor when alloyed with Arsenic (As), Gallium (Ga) or Phosphorus (P). Germanium can be used in optical fibres, catalysts, electronics, etc.
- Transistor and optoelectronic components
- Optics for its infrared transparency
- Manufacture of certain photovoltaic cells
