Existing practically only in the trivalent state (i.e. it creates atomic bonds with three other atoms), yttrium is a soft, shiny, silvery metal found naturally in the environment. Yttrium is used in the production of a wide variety of synthetic garnets, as well as in the production of lasers for the medical field.
