A soft, silvery-coloured metal, europium is considered to be the most reactive element in the rare earths group. It is an excellent dopant in cathode-ray tubes and certain glasses for lasers due to the absorption property of its neutrons. It is used in science as well as geochemistry, and can also produce a colour gradient from red to blue for use in Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
