Transformed into erbium oxide once extracted, erbium is a silver-grey metal that is malleable and ductile at room temperature, like most rare earths. In alloys, erbium is known to lower the hardness of Vanadium (V) (found mainly in steels). From medicine to electronics, erbium is used in a wide range of applications.
- Long distance optical fiber amplifiers
- Photovoltaic solar panels
- Medical-surgical lasers
- Pink dye for porcelain glazes, photographic filters
