Phosphorous acid is a diacid obtained by partial oxidation of phosphorus. It is also an oxy-acid in equilibrium with its tautomeric form, phosphonic acid. It can be synthesized by treating carboxylic acid H3PO3 or more often by treatment of phosphorus trichloride (PCl3).
