Sodium metaperiodate is an inorganic salt, composed of a sodium cation and the periodate anion. Also called sodium periodate (NaIO4) or sodium m-periodate. With the formula NaIO4, it is a salt useful as an oxidizing agent. When heated, sodium metaperiodate decomposes to form sodium iodate (NaIO3) and oxygen (O2). This decomposition reaction is catalyzed by the presence of manganese dioxide (MnO2).
