In its pure state, it is a solid in the form of black scales. It volatilizes at room temperature, giving off violet coloured vapours with a pungent odour. It is essential for the body and is notably concentrated in the thyroid gland, which uses it to produce thyroid hormones. Iodine and its compounds are widely used therapeutically. Externally, it is used as an antiseptic in the form of iodine tincture.
