Periodic acid is a moderately strong oxidizing agent and the highest oxo acid of iodine (in which iodine exists in the +7 oxidation state). Like all periodates, it can exist in two forms: orthoperiodic acid, with the chemical formula H5IO6 and metaperiodic acid with the formula HIO4. In diluted solution, periodic acid exists in the form of H+ and IO4- ions. In higher concentrations, orthoperiodic acid, H5IO6, is formed. The latter can be obtained in crystalline form. Orthoperiodic acid can be dehydrated to metaperiodic acid, HIO4. Further heating leads to the formation of diiodine pentoxide (I2O5) and oxygen.
