Lanthanum, with the symbol La, part of the Lanthanide series belongs to the RARE EARTH elements family. Rare earth resources are abundant, but not often found concentrated in rare-earth minerals, hence their name. The most abundant are cerium, Neodymium and lanthanum. In single crystal form, lanthanum is a malleable silvery white metal soft enough to be cut with a knife. Lanthanum derivatives are used in various industries. Nitrate (LaNO3,6H2O) is a rare lanthanum derivative, mainly available in its crystallised form.
