Rare earth resources are abundant, but not often found concentrated in rare-earth minerals, hence their name. Samarium is a rare metal on Earth. It is silver in colour, relatively stable in the open air and ignites spontaneously at 150 °C. Samarium trinitrate is a samarium compound with the formula Sm(NO3)3.
