Terbium, symbol Tb, is part of the Lanthanide series which belongs to the RARE EARTH elements group. Rare earth resources are abundant, but not often found concentrated in rare-earth minerals, hence their name. Terbium is extracted from monazite sand and its global production is not more than ten tons per year. It is a metal soft enough to be cut with a knife. With the chemical formula Tb4O7, terbium(III,IV) oxide is brown. It is a basic oxide which dissolves easily in dilute acid solutions and forms virtually colourless solutions of terbium(III) salts.
